These companies often travel to disaster areas, enlist high pressure techniques, often require payment upfront, and will likely disappear forever after they get paid. They might look official – but don’t take their word for it. Check their insurance and double-check their business name with the BBB, and try to always work with a local company with an established reputation.

Require All Guarantees Upfront and in Writing

A legitimate restoration company will have no problem providing you with a detailed contract of what work will be done, when, and each parties’ obligations for the work to be completed. Always make sure this is done in advance of any work being completed, and don’t leave anything blank.

Never Pre-Pay for Services

If a company requires you to pay upfront before work is to begin, or requires a large portion of the total cost of the job upfront, you should look elsewhere. These types of companies are usually dishonest and unreliable, and may just take your money and disappear. Also, never pay in cash – use a credit card or check so you have proof of payment.
